Russ earned his B Comm at the University of Alberta in 1977 and his CA in 1979. He joined Ernst & Young's (formerly Clarkson Gordon) Edmonton office as a staff accountant in 1977, rising to Partner and to Senior Vice President, before joining MacKay LLP in October 1999.

He completed the Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals (CAIRP) program in 1985 and two years later was appointed a Licensed Trustee in Bankruptcy. He became a Certified Fraud Examiner in 1995.

Russ is a former chairman of the Professional Standards Committee of the CAIRP and a past vice president of the Alberta Insolvency Association. He is a member of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.

Russ' practice focus is primarily in the areas of corporate recovery, insolvency, litigation support and forensic accounting.
